Legendary North East Ohio Restaurant Celebrates 75 Years
Proudly making guests happy for decades and tucked away in a quiet neighborhood just three blocks away from the shores of Lake Erie, Conneaut, Ohio’s legendary Pizzi Café is celebrating 75 years in business.
Pizzi Café owner Patrick Griswold explained that the historical Italian Café has stood the test of time and one of the reasons is the business still does many things the old fashioned way.
“Recently Pizzi Café was featured in PMQ Pizza Magazine and they investigated and pre-qualified us for the magazines monthly Time Capsule article that only features historical Italian Pizzerias and Cafes”, Griswold stated. “We had to provide all the historical proof as well as tell them some kitchen secrets to confirm the age of our original product recipe. For instance, the 75+ year old galvanized pans we use to bake our pizza that adds to the uniqueness of our product and helps create a texture and taste that cannot be duplicated”.
“Pizzi Café is truly a piece of history and we want to do whatever we can to preserve its place in history. Anthony Pizzi was the model, hard working and entrepreneurial immigrant that risked it all and boarded a boat for America at a young age to follow his dreams”, Griswold added.
Tony Pizzi opened his Conneaut, Ohio business in 1934 in what were two former fish drying sheds from the nearby harbor front. At the disbelief of others, Mr. Pizzi towed the sheds up the street three blocks and then double-faced bricked them together, himself.
Not only does the original building remain intact, the same things that made people happy seventy five years ago are still in place today. Including a very unique and cozy atmosphere, unrushed friendly service and made to order (from scratch) pizzas, Italian dishes, sandwiches, salads and more.
“If you are in a hurry or expect food that resembles anything near that of chain restaurants or pizza that starts as a frozen ball and cooks in seven minutes, like those television ad blasting pizza factories, you will not be happy with Pizzi Cafe”, Griswold explained. “All of our food starts from scratch very early every morning in our kitchen where sauces, meatballs and Italian sausages are made fresh and all vegetables, cheeses and other ingredients are sliced and chopped. As far as our unique peasant dough used for pizzas and other products it is not made fresh daily! It is made fresh hourly” Griswold added.
Throughout its history, Pizzi Café has believed in supporting its community and is regularly involved in fund raising activities for various organizations in the area. Also, consistently employing a minimum of fifteen people from the area, Pizzi Cafe remains one of Conneaut’s oldest and consistent small business employers.
The 75th anniversary of Pizzi Café is being celebrated throughout 2009 and customers are being entered into monthly drawings for great prizes like HDTV’s, iPods, GPS’s, Notebook Computers and more. In December 2009, the grand prize of a trip for two to Italy will be awarded.
Additionally, Pizzi Café will be holding a 75th anniversary celebration on July 25th and a 75th anniversary golf outing on August 8th. Both events are by invitation only and will include customers registered with Pizzi Café’s VIP customer program.
